Hangar Flying e-News Weekly Update
Sometimes, Ya’ Just Gotta’ Fly
It was almost ten o’clock last night when the text came in from an airpark neighbor—“$2.99 per gallon Avgas at Yerington tomorrow from 0700 until noon…or until they run out!” Well, sometimes, you just have to throw plans out the window and go fly!
AD Proposed For Piper Rudder Post Failures
The FAA is proposing a new airworthiness directive for certain vintage Piper aircraft after two separate nonfatal accidents were found to be the result of upper hinge rudder fractures in 2020 and 2021. According to the notice of proposed rulemaking, the FAA explains that the “AD would require replacing any rudder equipped with a rudder post made from a certain carbon steel with a rudder equipped with a rudder post made from a certain low-alloy steel.” The FAA estimates that the potential AD would affect 30,992 airplanes in the United States, costing operators about $3,000 each.

The Most Innovative Way to Modernize Your Cockpit!
Anyone who has flown an RV-4 will tell you that the only thing that flies better than an RV-4 is a lighter RV-4. However, not many pilots will get the chance to fly a truly light one. Van’s long-ago first brochures listed the weight of his 150-hp/wood-prop prototype at about 905 pounds, but that proved very difficult to achieve in the customer-built world.
The cooling air inlet serves two functions: First, and most important, the inlet must ingest enough air to properly cool the engine and accessories over the entire range of airspeed and power settings at which the airplane will fly. Secondly, the inlet should be designed to ingest the cooling air efficiently and minimize the drag penalty due to cooling flow. To do this the inlet should manage the airflow in a way that preserves the energy in the cooling airflow and disturbs the external flow over the airplane as little as possible.
STOL in a 65HP J-3, not really but let's see what it can Do.
With 65HP, no Flaps, Bush Tires or upgraded suspension, you Can't expect much from a J-3 but it's always fun to dream, lol. If you ever get a chance to watch one of these STOL Demos with the Pro's, definitely take the opportunity, it's amazing what they can do with their machines.
Overlooked tools for learning about an airport in ForeFlight
Flying to a new airport can be an intimidating experience, but with a little time spent studying ForeFlight you can learn a lot and enjoy a safer arrival at Big City International. (It should go without saying that this preparation should take place before you buckle into the left seat.) This means more than just checking the runway layout and the tower frequency, though; in recent years, a number of new resources have become available. Here are five to check out.
Do-It-Yourself Camera Mount
With the proliferation of GoPro and similar cameras mounted on airplanes, many different mounts have been devised. These range from duct tape or Velcro to slick, professionally designed mounts. Over the years I’ve experimented with a variety of mounts, including helmet mounts for paramotoring, bicycle handlebar mounts clamped to the tubes of ultralights, Velcro straps and suction cups.
